When Life Hits Hard: START SOMETHING!

Posted in health and wellness, leadership, true story tagged , , , , , , , , , at 8:23 am by Broken & Brave

Have you ever read Psalm 42 in its entirety? It’s the heart of young David being poured out to his God.

“Deep calls to deep

at the roar of your waterfalls;

all your breakers and your waves

have gone over me.

By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,

and at night his song is with me…” psalm 42:7-8

Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls. Wow. Can you feel that? Because I don’t just read it, I can feel it. If you have ever been in the surf of a beach—either on a board or body surfing the waves, you know what a swell can look like from underneath up close to it. Daunting. You don’t just see it lurch over you, you feel it coming, you hear it…just like David said, as a roar.

Have you ever been blind-sided by pain? Pain so deep you wondered where God is? Did he forget? Did he have something more important to do? Am I forgotten, or worse, forsaken? Why do we go through the trials we do? Why do some lead simple lives that are relatively uneventful while other live lives rich with activity and hardship? Life can bring drama, whether we signed up for it caused it or not, and it can feel like a tsunami swell headed straight toward us.

My husband and I have been apart of AdvoCare since 1995. This company impacted us supplement and nutrition/performance geeks 24 years ago. We both immediately fell in love with the products. I feel in countless ways AdvoCare was used by God to open up the marketplace and bring cutting edge nutrition in an era (the 90’s) when phytochemicals and their uses were being explored and discovered. Nutrition science was advancing at alarming rates. It was great. AdvoCare always stayed true to their word to improve the products as the science allowed.

We weren’t looking for it to be a business…that was something God did. We had been so impacted and our lives richly touched for the better we passionately shared with our family and friends who also experienced the same results we did. Before too long we were receiving calls from the company to congratulate us on our success and bless us. I had no idea what was happening. I just loved the products. But within a year I’d know myself to be pregnant with my first child. I was working two jobs (aside from our earnings in AdvoCare) and wanted the option to stay home. I kept praying for my husband to get a raise or hired as an athletic director somewhere (he was in Division 1 college athletics at the time). But every time I’d pray, I’d hear the Spirit of God say in a soft and peaceful voice, “AdvoCare”. In fact I continued to pray and finally after hearing the answer three times I also felt the Spirit quiet me to not ask anymore-AdvoCare was his answer.

Five children later we were still strong with AdvoCare and had built incredible relationships with people all over the country. AdvoCare is a true blessing to our life, and will remain to be so. The business structure may change, but the products remain. My earnings as commission won’t be in my bank account any longer the same way, but the friendships I keep. I will keep using and sharing and loving my AdvoCare. I want it that way. My God wants it that way, and I know Charlie, the founder of AdvoCare who passed away in 2001, he’d be honored by the Legacy we’ve all made.

The richness of leadership training and mentorship I received from AdvoCare is priceless! Charlie believed in building people (we build champions). And he put his money where his mouth was. Extraordinary leader and example. Mentorship from John C Maxwell and Leadership 2000. Norman Schwarzkopf, various sports heroes, Olympians, professional athletes and Andy Andrews, Jon Gordon, George W Bush (twice!), George and Barbara Bush, Bob and Elisabeth Dole, Alan Keyes, only to name a few! I gleaned so much from all of them. I learned a lot from Charlie himself.

So, we didn’t just loose an income, we lost a community, a culture, a family. Though the relationships remain, they will change just because. But God has used Charlie and his little Dallas based company to START SOMETHING.

And start something he did. We each, 100,000 distributors, are now being directed by God in different directions. Some remain all in AdvoCare building a retail business, some to other companies, some to nothing and some in full time ministry.

God gave us personally clear direction immediately. I am so grateful God didn’t make me wait in the hall on this one. The door closed suddenly, but God has directed.

John and I remain faithful to our AdvoCare brand. There is no doubt these products are good and are helping people. We will share them and use them. But while John will be as much support as he can be with AdvoCare Sports Advisory, I’m stepping out and trying my own to replace our income lost with DNA based nutrition. Anyone in nutrition knows this has been coming a while. We’ve come to the reality that we can use DNA testing to pinpoint specific nutrition needs for health and wellness and even fitness and weight loss goals. Cutting edge once again. So I am becoming like a two brand shoe store. I will share both product lines with my customer and clients for added blessing of finding the best fit for their needs (never mine).

John and I have always been a Holy Spirit Marketplace ministry operation. We do business as God leads. We get in peoples lives and help them mind…body…spirit. We love hard. We do life together. The name of my new business is ID Life. So far I am loving the product line. Compliments my other products very well. I’m nervous and excited. This is my baby. John has always been the leader. He has always taken care. I feel the Holy Spirit pushing me out of the nest to spread my wings.

So I am encouraged by David. He saw many and deep trials. He faced many giants, but he defeated every one.

I have faced many giants, and overcome. I am facing many giants right now, but I will overcome. I will stand firm and still and watch that tsunami wall of water as it comes for me turn into a drip of water right before me…unharmed. ~Nicole

“By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,

and at night his song is with me,

a prayer to the God of my life…

Why are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

my salvation and my God.”

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” Mark 12:30

Read your Bible, scriptures, every day—even if it’s only a verse! Just start with something. It’s like a morsel of Food that goes down good and you will develop an appetite for more.

Express your heart to God. That’s all prayer really is…a conversation with the best ear ever. Tell him your heart, really cut loose and be free with it. He is guaranteed to never judge you! You will find it to be exhilarating and liberating. . . The freshest air you could ever breathe.

Set your mind on things above. Worship when you become tempted to worry.

When we look at troubles and complications of life too much we are tempted to worry, get stressed and overwhelmed at times. Just look at how much money people spend on headache medications, anti-depressants, sleep aids and counseling or message therapy! I am not condemning these things, they are merely evidence of the intensity of society and the responsibility demands placed upon the minds and hearts of humanity. So how do we cope? How to we maintain a posture of peace? How do we hold strong in the fiercest of storms? When turmoil is imminent and cumbersome all around, how do we hold our ground? And for sure how do we do it while being still and resting? Let’s begin by trying to wrap our mind around this. . .

Begin practicing a posture of meditation before God. Find a quiet space that brings you some tranquility. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be the bathroom if that’s the only space you can get alone. Then just be still. Take a few deep breathes and worship. I try to be an early riser just so I can enjoy the absolute quiet of my home while the rest are still asleep.

Trust Abba Father, the Great I Am, the Ancient of Days, Majestic One, King of kings—some of the names attributed to an All Knowing Maker!

If He knows all, sees all, controls all of eternity at his fingertips, he can handle what ever your life holds.

Trust him.

It’s hard to explain how to trust him, but if you practice the acronym for rest I just prescribed it will work itself like medicine in your soul. It will nourish and deliver the contentment of a well balanced and delicious meal and it will cut through all your troubles like some well sharpened sheers. Just as you get better at anything with practice, the same is true for trusting.

Prayer for Your Day:

“Thank you, Lord, that you are sharp and skillful and able to handle my every care. You are worthy of my adoration and so I offer it to you. Take it with my gratitude and help me trust you when I want to worry. Guide my day and help my heart and soul to hear what you would desire to say. I need you more. Amen”

Have the kind of day today that causes your heart to rest easy and your face to wear a smile so pleasing. ~Nicole

Graced to be Great

Posted in health and wellness tagged , , , , , , at 8:24 am by Broken & Brave

We live in such a superficial society.

Appearance is everything and vanity is it’s chief council.

There are countless strategies available to make us look and feel great. Everything from head to toe–you’re covered if you’re willing to spend the time, money and energy to consume what society is selling.

Sustenance is an interesting thing.

I have noticed over many years of my recent life that the more affluent circles of our nations population base are overall more physically fit with healthy weight management. There are exceptions to this, of course, but overall this population of people looks pretty darn good. Most likely this is because they can afford it. Healthy foods cost more than packaged and processed foods. Gym memberships and personal trainers or high end, small, semi-private group training/classes are the trend. The higher end society is looking for something customized to the detail and complete and they are willing to pay money for it.

I think the more affluent community understands that–like it or not–your appearance is your business card.

It can take over eighty encounters with a person to change a negative first impression according to a recent study done at Harvard. So how you look, how you present yourself and how you treat/handle others plays a large roll in how successful you will be at pretty much everything.

I am a health advocate.

An advocate is an ardent defender of people and purpose. It is the purpose God placed inside me to use health and fitness as my ministry.

I’m focused not only on improving strength, flexibility, overall health and vitality, but I’m all about equipping others for victorious living.

I’m all about disease prevention and holistic natural applications of sustenance, rest and movement all packaged in each individual unit.

•I’m about casting vision for the woman who wants to hang with her kids at Disney well in her elder years without needing to sit down a lot or rent a wheel chair just to enjoy the family fun.

•I’m about not being on a myriad of prescribed meds that has people so frightened to even take a multivitamin because it might interfere with their drugs.

• I’m definitely about empowering females to believe in themselves and create a deeper awareness of how wonderful their form is and what strength they possess (physically, spiritual, mentally) and how to harness it.

Relationships of a mentoring nature can be difficult. There is the temptation to personalize and take ownership of the results, successes or failures of other people. But it is not our personal responsibility to fix the world. I can guide, love, protect and direct–but ultimately it’s their life and they are free to make whatever choices they desire, even poor ones.

As the mentor we understand that at the end of the day we leave everyone and everything at the base of the Cross. We did our part and that is all we can do. Then you just pray that the time and energy and sacrifice you put into them will stick and something good will flourish from it.

It could be easy to rehash all the sacrifice and time you’ve invested. The temptation is to feel a sense of disloyalty or lack of gratitude. But that’s not necessarily true, so don’t swallow that bait.

These practical truths I’m sharing with you apply to all of life.

We are all leading someone, somewhere by our conduct, life and example. We are living breathing sustenance to someone else’s soul.

I am fortunate in all my career I’ve only ever encountered one person who I detected may have an eating disorder. In this case, it was anorexia/bolemia. I know the clues to look for, but that was years ago (totally different story from the one I just described). But when I look around society I see many, many in every age group, race and economic category who suffer from a sort of spiritual eating disorder. A Spiritual Anorexia. They are starving to death because they don’t eat the right things. I’m not talking about food, I’m talking about thought patterns, focuses and methods to comfort their own pain. Soul Sustenance. I see people also who see the Truth, whether it is about themselves, God or others, but they refuse to eat it.

Anorexia is ultimately a spirit. It goes after the mind and influences the decisions of the individual causing them to believe skipping meals is somehow the answer to their problems or the solution for controlling their world. Spiritual Anorexia functions the same way. Distorted truth and a reflection of self, others and the world around is skewed. I imagine there are many people who suffer from both, spiritual anorexia and the physical manifestation of the disease. After all, if it is a spirit, it’s going to do as much damage to the whole of a person as it can once its invited inside. Satan’s objective is to steal, kill and destroy.

We are all mentoring others each and every day. What you say and do carries tremendous value and when you know this and take it serious–understanding the big picture of your life’s objective, then you can make a positive impact that will last.

Consider yourself a seed carrier. You are scattering it everywhere. Some seeds will do nothing, find no home to imbed themselves in. Others will find fertile soil of heart with just the right conditions to flourish and grow, while others will only grow so much then stop. This is not up to us to decide who will do what. All we can do is love, avoid personal feelings of hurt, and carry on knowing you’ve done your part and others may enjoy a higher quality of life because of the mark you made upon their heart.

Leadership does not come without great personal sacrifice.

Feed your body the right stuff so it will last.

Feed your heart and mind the right stuff so you will surpass any form of greatness you’ve experienced in the past.

Feed your soul Truth, Love and the Inspired Word of God. It is Pure and Good Sustenance from Above.

And never forget…

Take Joy in the Journey…

You have been sustained by Grace to be Great.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Cor. 10:31

Prayer of Health & Healing:

Thank you, Lord, for the heavy price and sacrifice you paid as a ransom for my mind, body and soul.

It is you I adore.

I show my adoration to you by caring for my body, my spirit, my life.

I understand that I am not my own. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

I trust you to remind me and equip me to overcome with my eating, rest and exercise. I will not overindulge and I will make wise choices. I will not neglect to exercise my frame.

I know I will enjoy good health as you have promised (3 John 1:2)

Whatever I do I will honor you with everything I eat or drink. Remind me of this when I am tempted to dishonor you with my nutrition.

(1 Corinthians 10:31)

I will do all of this with a cheerful heart (Proverbs 17:22)

because your love is like medicine to me.

In all things I will be equipped and my arms strong for my tasks.

I will have no lack of energy or enthusiasm for healthy living.

I will be consistent, disciplined and fervent. (Proverbs 31:17)

I will enjoy the fruit of obedience and faithfulness as you guide with healing and rest.

I am secure and prosperous in all things.

(Jeremiah 33:6)

I will walk obediently in all you ask me to do and I receive my full inheritance, my full blessing of health and prosperity and protection. Just like Exodus 15:26 promises me.

I am whole.

I am healthy.

I am healed.

Overcoming Obstacles To Wellness

Posted in health and wellness tagged , , , , , , , at 4:53 pm by Broken & Brave

The Dirty Dozen

You’ve been working hard. You’ve be faithful to exercise. You’ve been watching what you eat and your portions…but the weight just isn’t coming off like you would like to see. “What’s wrong? Is it just me?” You may be thinking. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not the exception. Here are a few things to consider if this scenario describes you:

1. You cannot out exercise a bad diet. Period. Results are the product of 70-80% nutrition and 20-30% exercise.

2. You are still drinking soda, even diet,   especially diet soda!

3. You are eating too much processed foods. The more natural the foods state the more your body will have to work to digest it. This in itself burns calories and is a workout from the inside!

4. You’ve been dooped by fake health food. You are unknowingly eating snacks you think are healthy little treats or cheats but are really junk food in disguise. This one is huge! Be a label reader. Look for the sugar content.

5. You eat too much sugar even if your calories are low. This includes fruit. Treat fruit like a dessert.

6. You don’t eat enough.

You need quality, frequency and believe it or not, quantity. Too little nutrition and your metabolism will shut down and save every calorie you ingest.

7. You are eating too many calories in the last part of your day.

We call this the sumo wrestler diet. Want to look like a sumo wrestler eat all your calories at night.

8. You aren’t eating enough protein.

Protein is the power house of the cell. All health starts at the cellular level. Feed them what they need!

9. You aren’t drinking enough water.

•how much is enough?

your body weight divided by 2 equals number of ounces you should have each day.

10. You are “rewarding” your hard work with desserts or treats. Scenario: You did fabulous all week with nutrition, portion control and exercise. You indulge in the weekend or special occasion because well, you earned it. Refer back to number 1. You cannot out exercise a bad diet. Don’t self sabotage!

11. You aren’t getting enough rest. The number of hours of sleep/rest you get before midnight is a good indicator of the quality of your overall rest. There is something to be said for early to bed and early to rise. You also need to listen to your body with training. Your body will tell you if you are over training and need a day off. Listen to it.

12. You are a nibbler. You eat a little taste here and there that seem insignificant, but by the end of the day you have several hundred unaccounted for calories going into your body. Illuminate nibbling and you just may find yourself dropping some inches or pounds and gaining ground.

Be a Champion! Honor yourself. Design your success and embrace your beauty. It won’t be reflected in a certain number on the scale, dress size or popping muscle. It will be found in a healthy fit you who feels good and as a result looks good. True health starts within. You can do it! ~Nicole

Recover And Replenish

Posted in health and wellness, Prayer of blessing tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , at 2:39 am by Broken & Brave

Recovery is where growth happens.

Transfix your eyes on Heaven.

Find your calm in His Presence as you learn the subtle art of releasing yourself to Him.

Watermark My Soul

What are you watering your soul with?

No matter who you are- your culture, your income, your status, your experience…we all have a soul and it thirsts. What do you serve it? Soul thirst is similar to physical thirst, but it cannot be quenched with water. It must receive Living Water in order to breathe.

Many fill their lives with endless pursuits, but in the end, they still thirst something they cannot see. Living Water will never leave you empty.

Drink it.

Become saturated with it and then leak it…leak it a lot…onto the heart and soul of others so they may thirst no more.

One of the coolest feelings in the world is not making people feel special about who we are, but about who they are. Isn’t it nice to feel special, if only to One.

The soul is like a well.

When you fill it with that right stuff it is meant to be shared. A well runs deep and that’s where the water is. Pump it and water others and that well won’t run dry as long as you continue to feed it the right things. I mean things like prayerful meditation on God. I mean reading scripture verses. I mean listening to a good message and reading good literature. You are a well of goodness that was meant to overflow-purely-into every soul you come in contact with.

Leave a watermark…

“but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 4:14

“The heart that loves is always young.” -Greek proverb

Let us refrain this day to drink in anything that is not of you. You are pure. You are clean. Your tranquil waters run deep and make a heart abound as well as become serene. You cup our hearts and hold our hands and living waters flow. We become carriers of your peace and radiant beams of your glory. We invite you in. Flood our heart. Flood our mind. Occupy our soul. Take ownership that we might be yours completely. This moment is not a moment to ask of you anything. It’s a moment to simply drink of your Presence. Amen.

Glow With it! Guiding Principles to Love Your Skin

Posted in health and wellness tagged , , , , , , , , , at 4:07 pm by Broken & Brave

Faith and Fitness.

So much to do and so many to care for! That’s life in America. We go, go, go and we rarely stop, stop, STOP! But what if we found a place of balance somewhere in between?

I think it’s possible.

It won’t happen by chance.

You will have to be decided.

Intentional will have to be your mantra.

Drive of heart, mind, body and spirit.

You have a big heart and big spirit! How do I know? You wouldn’t be spending time reading my blog if you weren’t looking to feed your mind, heart or soul. You’re here! And I am so glad you came.

When there are a million other places you could be, I value your time and attention. Nothing in life will be of greatest value than your time. You didn’t allow distraction to subtract or the television to suck your brain of its ability to think for itself. You’ve been proactive. Maybe you’re researching or have stumbled upon my blog with a helpful hashtag? Perhaps you’ve been glazing over Pinterest looking for articles or inspiration to begin with health and fitness? If you are new, Welcome! But if you’ve read my writing for any length of time, you know there are two very powerful passions and influences in my life. My faith and fitness. Let’s chat about fitness today!

Guiding Principles to Love Your Skin:

Today I want to talk you about nutrition for your skin, hair and nails. Your skin (dermis), is the largest organ of your body. With an estimated 35 trillion cells, your skin needs a lot of love.

There are so SO many skincare products on the market. Where is one to begin? I do believe, by what I’ve researched and experienced, skincare really does pay more to pay more. Not every expensive skincare protocol is effective, but it is in my opinion a scarcity to find something of pristine quality on the bargain racks. Skincare of a topical nature absorbs via the epidermis (top layer of skin) down into the sublayers. The higher the nutrition content and delivery system, the better it will penetrate without entering the bloodstream. Some products just rub on the surface and don’t penetrate (and usually feel greasy), and some go so deep they pass right through the skin to blood which won’t benefit you either. So where am I going with this? Believe it or not, I’m not planning to pitch a topical I love, but I will share something I’ve been using and am happy with. I do not receive compensation for this shout out! I just believe in Rebecca and her products.

I’ve been using oils and extracts created by Rebecca Nowak and her company, Crunchy Mama Bear. Her products are all organic. She is a small business owner and you can find her on Etsy. My son is a waterpolo player and in the California sun year round. Her none toxic sun balm is the bomb! Sun Butter for the win!

Ultimately, the health of your skin is best enhanced and improved by what you do internally. So–here’s those gauges to watch:

•How much quality sleep/rest you get

•Exercise/activity levels (exercise forces blood to circulate to surface this enhancing blood flow and reducing visible signs of wrinkles)

•What you eat

•What alcohol you drink and how much water you drink

•Nutrition rich in fiber and complex vitamins and minerals (antioxidant Power nutrients)

•Sun exposure (don’t forget the sun butter!)

•Collagen Support

Let’s focus right now on collagen.

What is collagen and how can we support it?

Your entire body has not only a bone skeleton, but it also has a collagen skeleton. The entire heart has a small matrix of collagen for support. I find this amazing! Collagen supports joints making our ligaments and tendons stronger than strong yet extremely flexible. As we age the collagen loses moisture breaks down and becomes more brittle. By our mid thirties we have begun losing 1% per year of our skin plumping and firming collagen! Collagen helps keeps those wrinkles away!

I’m going to share some ideas in hopes you’ll pay attention to this super important nutrient in our bodies.

Recap: What does collagen do?

✔️promotes skin elasticity

✔️holds together your bones and muscles

✔️protects your organs

✔️provides structure to joints and tendons

Use foods to boost collagen. Some examples could be eggs ~have to eat the yolks!, wild caught salmon, citrus fruits, garlic, avocados, tomatoes, berries, leafy greans, bone broth to name a few choices.

Here’s a bundle of AdvoCare products to add for simplicity of collagen building ability.

Each one of these products can be purchased stand alone.

I’ve been using them and truly notice a profound difference in the integrity of my hair, in particular.

Another collagen product AdvoCare creates support joint collagen Is called Flex. I have many customers raving about how much their joints feel better with this one. Whether your just aging, have old sports injuries or are a weekend warrior, Flex Works!

I do receive commissions if you chose to order AdvoCare from my website. I appreciate your business and trust me, I don’t recommend anything I don’t use and truly believe in. I’m a tough sell and I’m sure you are too. No hype, just results. Feel free to browse my site while there and explore all of the product line for better health and wellness.

Wellness is ultimately about quality of life and disease prevention. We learn, and more importantly we put into practice what we learn, and we can enjoy a healthy whole life where we can expect to feel good everyday. Here’s to your health!

In Health,
